A Glasgow-born surveyor has taken the art of the unusual wedding proposal to a new height by asking his sweetheart to marry him at the top of a 130ft bungee jump.
Liam Cheshire (26) planned a secret surprise for unsuspecting student teacher Marisa Russo (22) after buying her a bungee jump as a birthday present. He then stunned the Napier University student from Blantyre by going down onbended knee and proposing just as she was preparing to take a plunge of a different kind.
Liam invited members of Marisa’s family, and his own, to witness Marisa jumping 40 metres from the Highland Fling Bungee platform at Killiecrankie, Highland Perthshire.
Unbeknown to Marisa, both sides of the family were in on the plan and were there to congratulate the newly engaged couple after they descended from the platform.
As a special engagement present, Highland Fling Bungee staff also gave Liam a free jump which he duly accepted.
“We’ve been together nearly four years but Marisa had no inclination at all I was going to ask her on the platform, I’d had the wedding ring in the pocket of an old jacket for a while and I thought it would be something a bit unusual to ask her at the top of a bungee jump. Originally, I asked if I could go out on the platform with Marisa, which wasn’t possible. However, when I told the Highland Fling Bungee staff what my intention was, they were brilliant and helped to make it all possible. Just as Marisa was harnessed off, I got down on bended knee and said my speech. She said ‘yes’, which was brilliant, and jumped after that.”
The couple, who have been living together for a year in Carnbroe, are yet to set a date for the big day. However, both know it will take something extra special to top their engagement.
“I was on the ledge and ready to jump when Liam asked me. It was my first time doing a bungee jump and I was totally petrified but it was a really nice way to be asked,” said Marisa, who admits she is still ‘all excited’.
“The photos were great as well so we’ll have them to remember the day. It was really special.”
Staff at Highland Fling Bungee were delighted to witness the first marriage proposal on their £200,000 bungee platform.
Managing Director Murray Trail said: “Liam and Marisa are a great couple. When Liam told us what he wanted to do all our staff shared in the excitement and no one let the secret out. We wish them all the very best for the future.”
