A Glasgow-born surveyor has taken the art of the unusual wedding proposal to a new height by asking his sweetheart to marry him at the top of a 130ft bungee jump.
Liam Cheshire (26) planned a secret surprise for unsuspecting student teacher Marisa Russo (22) after buying her a bungee jump as a birthday present. He then stunned the Napier University student from Blantyre by going down onbended knee and proposing just as she was preparing to take a plunge of a different kind.
Liam invited members of Marisa’s family, and his own, to witness Marisa jumping 40 metres from the Highland Fling Bungee platform at Killiecrankie, Highland Perthshire.
Unbeknown to Marisa, both sides of the family were in on the plan and were there to congratulate the newly engaged couple after they descended from the platform.
As a special engagement present, Highland Fling Bungee staff also gave Liam a free jump which he duly accepted.
“We’ve been together nearly four years but Marisa had no inclination at all I was going to ask her on the platform, I’d had the wedding ring in the pocket of an old jacket for a while and I thought it would be something a bit unusual to ask her at the top of a bungee jump. Originally, I asked if I could go out on the platform with Marisa, which wasn’t possible. However, when I told the Highland Fling Bungee staff what my intention was, they were brilliant and helped to make it all possible. Just as Marisa was harnessed off, I got down on bended knee and said my speech. She said ‘yes’, which was brilliant, and jumped after that.”
The couple, who have been living together for a year in Carnbroe, are yet to set a date for the big day. However, both know it will take something extra special to top their engagement.
“I was on the ledge and ready to jump when Liam asked me. It was my first time doing a bungee jump and I was totally petrified but it was a really nice way to be asked,” said Marisa, who admits she is still ‘all excited’.
“The photos were great as well so we’ll have them to remember the day. It was really special.”
Staff at Highland Fling Bungee were delighted to witness the first marriage proposal on their £200,000 bungee platform.
Managing Director Murray Trail said: “Liam and Marisa are a great couple. When Liam told us what he wanted to do all our staff shared in the excitement and no one let the secret out. We wish them all the very best for the future.”
A widowed former serviceman says he will ‘do it again’ after becoming the oldest bungee jumper in Europe on his 90th birthday.
Dare-devil nonagenarian Bob Steele leapt 132ft from Highland Fling Bungee’s platform at Garry Bridge, Killiecrankie, at 50mph on Monday afternoon.
Afterwards he said he’s happily try it again after his record breaking plunge raised money for Scottish Veteran charity, Erskine, and Great Ormond Street hospital.
Bob- a keen believer in staying active- fought in Egypt during the Second World War and also worked for the BBC and on the railways in his working career.
Now living in West Sussex, he reckons it was the perfect way to mark his four score years and ten.
“I am glad I have done it and, yes, I’d do it again. It is nothing to be scared of and it’s not stressful. I was a bit disorientated at the start but it was great and I’m happy to have done it. I’ve actually done two sky dives before.”
Bob, who admits jumping from a bridge on an elasticated rope might not be every senior citizen’s thing, puts his longevity and spark down to regular exercise when younger.
“I’ve always been active. I did a lot of cycling when I was younger and then I went into hill walking and I used to do a couple of thousand miles a year until I got dodgy ankles.”
Bob was watched by two grand daughters, Kerrie Pasifull and Fay Stevens and his grandson-in-law Wayde Pasifull, who also bungee jumped to mark his birthday.
Highland Fling Bungee Managing Director Murray Trail said: “We’ve had jumpers from the age of 14, right through the age spectrum, but Bob is a hero and this is a European first, as far as records go.”
Bob still has a bit to go to catch up with world record holder, South African Mohr Keet, who bungee jumped from Bloukrans Bridge in 2010 at the age of 96.
Frances Gabe, an American, is the oldest woman bungee jumper on the planet.
The Californian dived at the age of 91 at the Fresno Fair after recovering from colon cancer.
